How to Travel to Cabo San Lucas (During COVID)

Updated: Mar 23

Spring break is here...Time for another beach vacay!

We decided to go out of the US this time since COVID seems to be easing up post Omicron.

I'm still "boostered" and I stay healthy and fit with my daily outdoor walks and 80/20 rule diet (will post about this in the future ;-) ).

I am writing this today, March 22, 2022. Things can change like daily so I think generally speaking, overall, the tips I post here should still help you.

Weeks Before Your Travel Date

1. A gentle reminder to get "fully" vaccinated. It is your best bet you can travel to Mexico prepared. For more details on travel requirements, click HERE. They update this with the most current info.

2. Book your travel way in advance to make sure you get the best price in Cabo. Try these to sites to get the best deal.

Once you have booked your travel (flights, hotel, car {if needed}) then all you have to do is get ready for the actual trip.

Note: We opted to use the roundtrip airport shuttle from SJD to the hotel. You can book this using VIATOR. This costs ~$45/pp RT.
We stayed at Hilton Los Cabos where you can either take a cab to the city sights for ~$25 or, UBER for ~ $12- $15 (you will need to go out of the secured gates of the property to pick you up)

3. What to pack.

a. If you only have a carry on, Pinterest gives helpful visual tips. Most airlines ONLY allow 1 carry-on and a personal item (this can be a big purse or backpack).

b. If you are checking in a bag, I recommend searching for "what to pack during <enter the season like "spring" or "March" > in Cabo.

Here are some essentials:

  • 2- 3 Bathing suits/Trunks

  • Flip Flops

  • Tank tops or T-shirts (mix match plain ones and printed

  • Shorts

  • Women - One or two wrinkle free dresses for a nice dinner

  • Men - One or two Hawaiian dress shirts or just plain dress shirts for a nice dinner

  • Beach bag

  • Sunglasses

  • Moisturizer

  • Aloe after sun gel

  • Water bottle

  • Antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer

  • Medication kit - Tylenol, Nyquil Flu, Emergence, Anti-Diarrhea, Bandaids, Neosporin and, if you have prescription meds, make sure you have enough for the trip and a several more just in case you get delays.

NOTE: Most hotels provide sunscreen and probably better since they are biodegradable and eco-friendly but I recommend the COOLA brand of products since it goes on clear and it is eco-friendly as well. If it is >3 oz, be sure to pack it in your check-in bag.

4. Book your activities because they get sold out fast. We used VIATOR

for booking activities like the famous "Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco) Tours and Activities". The process is so easy and the customer service is top notch!

5. Book dining ahead of time especially for the most popular restaurants. I used Open Table.

We stayed at the Hilton Los Cabos where we mostly ate our meals, I highly recommend the following area restaurants:

6. Book a pet-sitter if you have pets. Download the app Rover which connects you to pet-sitters in your area.

Travel Day minus 5 Days!

  1. Few days before travel day, go to your airline app to Check for TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS . You will need to complete each step or docs needed. This way, it gives you some time to prep if you are missing anything.

  2. Re-check your items to pack especially your meds, vaccine card(s). Make a copy and keep it in you phone just in case.

3. Reserve airport parking online, it is typically cheaper than paying at the airport.

4. Purchase several masks. I recommend you get the KN95 or medical grade type mask.

5. Purchase travel insurance OR use a good credit card that includes travel insurance when using it for purchasing travel like CHASE Ink. Perks of using this card during travel?

  • Pay no foreign transaction fees You'll pay no foreign transaction fees on purchases made outside the U.S., no matter where your business takes you.

  • Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption Insurance – If your trip is canceled or cut short by sickness, severe weather and other covered situations, you can be reimbursed up to $5,000 per person and $10,000 per trip for your pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses, including passenger fares, tours, and hotels**

**These benefits are available when you use your card. Restrictions, limitations and exclusions apply. Most benefits are underwritten by unaffiliated insurance companies who are solely responsible for the administration and claims. There are specific time limits and documentation requirements. Please refer to your Guide to Benefits for a full explanation of coverages, or call the number on the back of your card for assistance.

Travel Day

1. Go to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. For Mexico, you can check in ahead of time using your phone and even get to scan your passport! Refer to below: (at least for American Airlines, this is an option)

American claims to be the first airline to offer passport chip scanning that securely transmits information directly from the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip embedded in passports.

2. Buy water at the airport prior to boarding. HYDRATiON is a must to keep you healthy.

3. DO NOT to touch high traffic areas like door knobs, elevator buttons etc with your bare hands. For some FAQ, you can read some helpful tips from the CDC

4. Board your flight and stay safe by following some helpful tips below.

Note: Always wash your hands, do not touch your face, keep your mask on and sanitize your hands every chance you get especially after touching high traffic areas you cannot avoid.

During the flight, I choose the healthy dining option and I also take some Emergen C with me and ask for water to mix it with.

5. When you arrive, just maintain good health practice as usual with helpful tips typically posted in the resort itself... and enjoy the trip!

6. A day before you leave, book your COVID test. Hilton Los Cabos offers onsite testing for $30/pp. You get it in ~15-30 minutes via email. Attach this to the travel documents required to return to the US.
